For our anniversary, we went all out and took a week off the bikes to go check out Iguazu Falls. Our original plan for the Tour had included riding there, but it turns out Iguazu is super far away from everything else and would have cost us somewhere around 15-20 days of somewhat dull riding. So we took a bus!

Our first view of the falls... spectacular!

Although we had planned this “anniversary side trip” for weeks, we were a little surprised when we got to Salta and discovered the tickets to Iguazu were twice as much as what we had researched. We really had a dilemma trying to decide, but we went for it! We figured it will never be this cheap again… if we ever travel to South America in the future, it would still require either a plane or bus to reach Iguazu.

When Eleanor Roosevelt saw Iguazu for the first time, her response was "Poor Niagara!"

The "Devil's Throat"--the biggest of the falls. It was really unfathomable how much water was coming over this thing!

The falls were fantastic, and we don’t regret our decision to go. We spent a whole day wandering around the national park, checking out all the different catwalks from which you can view the falls. We have never seen anything like it… there were just so many of them!

The speedboat in the front goes right up to the falls. We took our chances on this tour to get an up close view!

The result of the boat ride? Two totally drenched Garths! But we loved it!

As a side note, we did not so much enjoy the 24-hour bus ride to get to Iguazu! Yikes! It made us really appreciate our current form of travel—on the bikes we get plenty of fresh air and exercise. Even just spending four days away from our bikes (we left them in Salta) made us miss them!

We actually did all this a few days after our anniversary. For the actual day, we kept our annual “Pi Day” tradition (yes, we got married on 3.14) alive by eating a delicious dulce de leche and chocolate pie and going out for dinner in Cafayate. Yum!

Happy Pi Day!
